24 Unmissable Restaurants in Ericeira Portugal

Even after living in Ericeira for almost two years, I still constantly find new restaurants that raise the already-high bar. 

“How have I never been here before?!” 

“You’re telling me this place has been a five-minute walk to my house all this time?”

“This is my new favorite restaurant in Ericeira!”

Because Ericeira is so compact, you are steps away from pretty much any type of cuisine you want at all times, and the restaurants in Ericeira are great. Really great. 

Quick tips for dining in Ericeira:

Reservations: I recommend making a reservation for dinner. Places fill up quickly, especially during the high season between Easter and October and the peak summer months, so it’s always a good idea to make a reservation in advance.  

Couvert: Traditional Portuguese restaurants will offer you a couvert of bread, olives, butter, and cheese when you sit down at the table. If you eat it, you’ll see it charged on your bill and it usually costs around 2 euros per person. I love couvert and I always get it, but if you aren’t interested, you can let your server know and you won’t be charged. 

Dinner times: Restaurants in Portugal usually open for dinner around 7:00 pm or 7:30 pm and dinner service typically runs until 10:00 pm or 11:00 pm. Some restaurants do dinner in seatings at specific times (for example, a first seating at 7:30 pm and a second seating at 9:30 pm) so keep this in mind when you ask about booking a table. 

Seasonal hours: Some restaurants will have different hours depending on the season. It’s common for restaurants to be open longer and more days of the week in the summer, but have limited availability in winter when there are fewer people in town. Your best bet is to call ahead or stop by and ask to make sure you’ve got the correct opening hours. 

Tipping: If you receive excellent service, it’s nice to leave a tip. While it’s not required, leaving a few euros on the table can show your appreciation for a nice meal.

Best tapas restaurants in Ericeira

Mar das Latas

Mar das Latas is one of the most high-end restaurants in Ericeira, and it’s a place we love to go for special occasions. They have an impeccable fine wine list and a great location with ocean views right next to Praia dos Pescadores. 

They serve sharing-style plates that rotate with the seasons, and they recommend that you order around 2-3 plates for each person. From beef cheeks to sautéed carrots with whipped feta, we didn’t eat a single thing that we didn’t love. 

Mar das Latas also runs a wine bar next door to the main restaurant. In addition to delicious wines, the Mar das Latas wine shop serves finger foods and snacks if you want something more casual or want to grab a drink before dinner. A great place for watching the sunset in Ericeira! 

La Popular Taberna

La Popular is an adorable Spanish tapas place and I can’t believe I waited so long before trying it. La Popular is located in a tiny older building in the center of town with casual decor and amazing food. The staff will take excellent care of you, the prices are affordable, and the wines are delicious and free-flowing. I feel like I’m family every time I go, and I can’t wait to take friends and loved ones here the next time they visit. Make sure to get the potatoes with black garlic sauce, the bread with fresh tomatoes, and the croquettes! 

Lab Ericeira

I went to Lab for the first time a few months ago and it quickly became a go-to in our house! Lab is also a tapas place in the center of town, and it has an amazing seasonal menu with small plates, snacks, and some of the best fresh bread, homemade butter, and burrata you can get your hands on. If it’s in season, I highly recommend the butternut squash gnocchi!

Tik Tapas 

Tik Tapas is one of our favorite restaurants in town for Portuguese dishes served tapas style. They have a huge tapas menu broken down by meat, sea, and earth (vegetables) as well as a wonderful dessert list. My favorite dishes are the Padron peppers, sautéed potatoes, and sautéed mushrooms, and they also have several different steak and seafood options. 

Make sure to call ahead and book your table because it fills up fast, and open hours might vary with the season. Because Tik Tapas doesn’t open until 7:00 pm for dinner service, we usually try to call the day before to book. A must for at least one night of your visit.

Best traditional Portuguese restaurants in Ericeira

Casa Portuguesa

One of the best places to try classic Portuguese food is Casa Portuguesa. This welcoming restaurant is decorated with traditional azulejo tiles and serves Portuguese meat dishes, seafood, and a nice variety of salads and pasta. It’s also a great spot for lunch and they have a few outdoor tables for enjoying the nice Ericeira weather. 

Taberna Lebre

I lived here for over a year before I went to Taberna Lebre, and all I could think was how did I not know about this place sooner? This cozy and casual Ericeira restaurant has traditional Portuguese prego sandwiches, burgers, and burritos served alongside the best potato wedges.

At lunchtime they have a line out the door, so make sure to get there when they open since they might run out of ingredients as the day goes on. When my parents came to visit this past year, this was one of our go-to lunch spots and every time it was as good as the last.

Pedra Dura 

Pedra Dura is an easy place to grab a bite anytime with plenty of indoor and patio seating, a large menu, and friendly staff. At Pedra Dura, you can try classical Portuguese dishes like steak on a stone (you cook it yourself at the table), seafood, pasta dishes, salads, and lasagna. Pedra Dura is a good option if you’re with a group since they have lots of seating and a variety of menu items. One of my Ericeira go-to’s for an easy and reliable meal. 

7Janelas 

7Janelas, or 7 Windows, is a craft brewery with a cheerful restaurant that also specializes in traditional Portuguese dishes. They serve all the Portuguese classics like bitoque, bacalhau, and pregos, plus they have amazing steaks and burgers, including my favorite veggie burger in town. Their house beers are also a fun option for anyone who enjoys local brews, and there’s cozy indoor and outdoor seating. 

Best seafood restaurants in Ericeira

A Panela 

Honesty time, I’m not usually a big seafood person. I know that’s unheard of coming from a person who lives in a seaside town, but I just love my veggies! 

That said, I had the grilled fish at A Panela, and it was outstanding. I can’t wait to go back and have it again. A Panela is a local restaurant with a warm interior decorated with money from around the world. You can order traditional Portuguese dishes like steak or the house specialty of grilled fish. 

I decided to get the fish here because when I was waiting outside for my table, the chef was grilling fish right outside beside the restaurant and it smelled amazing. So inside I ordered the fish recommended by the server and it didn’t disappoint. I took my parents here when they were in town and we all agreed this was one of our most memorable meals. 

Ti Matilde

Ti Matilde is a top lunch spot serving fresh grilled fish. It’s located right on the Ericeira cliffs near Praia do Norte and Praia de São Sebastião, and they have an outdoor seating area that’s perfect for lunch, dinner, or sunset with a view. 

This restaurant specializes in seafood, and you can order whole fish to be cooked and shared at a table. When you walk up, you can even see fish being grilled fresh in the front window. We took some friends here last summer, and they also raved about the prawns and seafood stew. Call all ahead to book, and make sure you request an outdoor table for the best view.

Best pizza in Ericeira

Pepe Verde

Pepe Verde is my favorite pizza restaurant in Ericeira, and there’s a good reason it’s one of the most popular restaurants in town. They offer over a dozen unique and delicious pizzas, as well as classics like Diavola, Margarita, and Quatro Fromaggi. (My go-to pizzas are the Diavola and Genova.)

This is the place to go if you’re in the mood for pizza, but make sure to book a table in advance on the weekends or any day during the summer high season. The staff is incredible and will make sure you’re well cared for!

Pizzeria Pão d’Alho

Pizzeria Pão d’Alho is a friendly pizza and Italian restaurant near Praia do Sol. I went here for the first time after walking past it several evenings, and wondering where the heavenly smell was coming from. After trying it, I understand why there’s often a line out the door and why this is a popular choice for local families and visitors alike. 

Pão d’Alho serves pizzas, pasta dishes, salads, steaks, and prawns in a welcoming atmosphere with surfer decor, memorabilia, and sports on TV. Definitely make sure to try the bread with garlic butter starter. 

Bocca

For another pizza option that you’ll love, head to Bocca for thin crust and delicious Roman-style pizza. They have a great menu with lots of red-sauce base and white-sauce base pizzas, as well as a few starters and snacks. There’s indoor and outdoor seating and an open kitchen where you can watch the magic happen — a great place for a slice close to down.

Voyage Pizza

Sometimes you just want to have a delicious stone-fired pizza while soaking up the sun at the beach, and that’s where Voyage Pizza is perfect. This restaurant is right on São Julião beach, about a 10 minute drive south of Ericeira, and there’s a huge outdoor dining space, plenty of parking, and excellent pizza. It’s the perfect option if you want to make a day of it, and they also serve typical cafe snacks, coffees, drinks, and ice cream.

Best Italian Ericeira restaurant

Cucina 37 

Cucina 37 is located just a few steps off the main town square and has traditional Italian dishes like homemade carbonara, bolognese, risotto, and stuffed tortelli. The atmosphere is slightly more upscale but still comfortable, and there are outdoor tables with a view of the pedestrian street leading to the center of town. 

The food here was delicious, good for a special occasion. I loved the eggplant lasagna and my partner raved about the carbonara. 

Best Vegetarian and Vegan restaurants in Ericeira

Green is Good

Green is Good is a healthy food restaurant with great vegetarian and vegan options. It’s one of my favorite places to grab brunch in Ericeira and they have excellent egg dishes, pancakes,  salads, crostinis, and bowls. They also serve fresh juices, coffees, and homemade teas. This is probably your best bet for vegetarian options in town, and you’ll love how many colorful dishes there are to choose from. 

Best Mediterranean restaurant in Ericeira

Balagan 

Balagan is a stylish Mediterranean and Middle Eastern-inspired restaurant located right on the water at Praia do Sul. There’s a cafe downstairs where you can grab coffee, baked goods, and quick bites throughout the day, and there’s a sit-down restaurant upstairs where you can enjoy delicious food with a panoramic view of the ocean.

The food is always top-notch, and Balagan is known for having amazing cocktails, lemonades, and daily juices. We love coming here on the weekends and grabbing a spot in the sun with a passionfruit lemonade, chicken skewers, and a mezze plate with hummus, falafel, pita, and veggies. The Gin Basil cocktail is in a league of its own!

Best sushi in Ericiera 

Onegai Sushi

I went here with a friend a few weeks ago (after having it recommended by countless other friends) and was blown away by how good the food was! The miso soup, cucumber salad, and veggie sushi were so good I’m still dreaming about them, and my friend had great reviews about the traditional rolls too. An easy yes if you’re looking for a sit-down sushi place with a slightly more upscale but still charming ambiance.

Predio Ericeira

This upscale sushi place is still on my list to visit, but I’ve heard from several friends (and sushi enthusiasts) that Predio is their favorite sushi and Asian cuisine spot in the village. The building is gorgeous and they have a rooftop patio with a great view of the city, perfect for sunset drinks in addition to your meal.

Predio serves sushi, nori tacos, dumplings, teriyaki bowls, and yakissoba with a decent number of vegetarian and vegan options. A good choice for a special occasion in town at a beautiful location. 

Best Indian restaurant in Ericeira

Red Chilli

Hands down, Red Chilli has the best Indian food in Ericeira. Their flavors are so good I’m still dreaming about them days later. The restaurant is located near downtown and they have indoor and outdoor seating. They also do take away, and this is one of our go-to orders if we’re having a chill night at home watching F1 highlights.

I love Red Chilli’s samosas, onion bhaji, butter chicken, Jalfrezi, and tika masala. Honestly, I haven’t had anything here I didn’t like. Now that I think of it… maybe this is where I should get dinner tonight! 

Best restaurant in Ericeira for a casual meal any time of the day

Pão da Vila

A classic Ericeira restaurant and cafe, Pão da Vila is open almost every day with a wide menu of breakfast, lunch, dinner, and bakery items. There’s plenty of seating both inside and outside overlooking the main square, the staff is friendly, and the meals are a great value for the price. I love the veggie wrap, the giant omelet (if you’re really hungry!), and their salads. Make sure to grab a sweet treat inside once you’re done!

Galiota

Galiota is my favorite tosta place in Ericeira. If you haven’t had a tosta yet, drop everything and head to Galiota. These traditional Portuguese sandwiches are similar to a grilled cheese with tons of amazing fillings, and giant! I ordered the half portion at Galiota and it’s still bigger than my head. The garden veggie option is so delicious, and every time I’ve taken friends they agree that these sandwiches are the perfect way to end a day at the beach. The staff is wonderful and they have a nice indoor and outdoor seating area close to Praia do Sul. 

Best ice cream shops in Ericeira

No day at the beach would be complete without ice cream, right? Here are two great spots to grab ice cream in Ericeira after your tasty meal. 

Nutwood Gelataria

Nutwood is one of the best ice cream shops in town (and approved of by our Italian friends!) The staff is great and they have a unique selection of creative flavors of gelato, sorbet, and ice cream. They even have some vegan, dairy-free, and sugar-free options. The salted caramel is my go-to and I can’t wait to try the bubble waffle + ice cream combo!

Blue Ice 

Blue Ice serves incredible homemade gelato and ice cream located just a few steps from the town square. They make all their ice creams by hand in their shop, and Blue Ice has been present in Ericeira for over 25 years. 

On warm days, Blue Ice has a line out the door for a good reason. My favorite is the dark chocolate ice cream which has a texture like velvet, and the Snickers ice cream with chunks of candy inside. You can’t go wrong with Blue Ice, so make sure to swing by here at least once on your trip.

Few places in the world have such a high concentration of great restaurants in such a tiny area as Ericeira. I’ll keep this list of the best restaurants Ericeira has to offer updated as I try more places, but in the meantime, bon appétit.
